Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il refusa de diriger les travaux sur la bombe atomique. En juillet 1955, il co-signa le Manifeste Russel-Einstein contre les armes nucléaires. En 1958, il fit circuler une pétition contre les essais nucléaires qui fut présentée à l’ONU. En reconnaissance de son engagement en faveur de la paix, Linus Pauling reçut le prix Nobel de la Paix en 1962, son deuxième après son prix Nobel de chimie en 1954.
